Michael Campbell oined the golfing elite as a Major Champion in 2005 when he won the US Open Championship after holding off the challenge of World Number One Tiger Woods at Pinehurst No.2. He was the first New Zealander to win a Major since Bob Charles in 1963 and sparked wonderful celebrations in his homeland.
Parliament was even suspended as the Government watched the drama unfold and he was accorded a Welcome Home Parade in Wellington. Followed that by becoming only the fourth player to win the US Open and the World Match Play Championship in the same year. Not surprisingly, was named 2005 European Tour Golfer of the Year and given Honorary Life Membership of The European Tour in recognition of his US Open triumph.
Previously honoured in The Queen’s Birthday Honours List in 2001 where he received an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit Award for his services to golf. Has historical links to Scotland through his great-great-great-grandfather Sir Logan Campbell who emigrated from Edinburgh to New Zealand in 1845.
