Results of National Qualifying Tournament for Maybank Malaysian Open 2009

Kuala Lumpur, 20 January 2009 – After two tough days of play at Saujana Golf and Country Club, five local professionals have claimed their spot in the Maybank Malaysian Open 2009 and will tee off with some of the best golfers from the European and Asian Tours.

Holding onto his lead from day one, R. Nachimuthu shot 73 on day two and finished in top spot. He said, “It was good today. I feel pretty happy about my performance as I felt in control of everything.”

Looking ahead to the big event next month he said, “I am going to take a few days break and then practice really hard and familiarise myself with the course. I would like to make the cut next month so I need to focus a lot on my own performance.”

Maintaining second spot in the table was Anis Helmi. He did enough with a second round score of 74 to play himself into the event but knows he has a lot of work to do saying, “My game was satisfactory enough to get myself into the Maybank Malaysian Open but I need to focus on my putting and come back to train at Saujana as often as I can before next month.”

There to lend his support to the thirty-six local professionals battling it out was Vice President of the Malaysian Golfers Association (MGA) Tuan HJ Mohd Yaacob Mohd Kassim. Congratulating the winners he said, “I am very pleased to see five of our local players qualifying for this prestigious tournament. While I still see areas for improvement in their games, I believe we will see tremendous effort and a very good showing from them during the Maybank Malaysian Open 2009.”

The final three spots up for grabs were taken by P. Gunasegaran, Lim Eng Seng and P.Paramaswaran who were tied on 148 after the two rounds on the Palm Course. Lim Eng Seng was making his debut as a professional at the National Qualifying so he is delighted to have finished in the top places.

P.Paramaswaran was a reserve player for the 2006 Malaysian Open but will be one of the confirmed players after this week’s performance. “This will be my first time playing in the Maybank Malaysian Open and it will be a great honour for me. I have lots of work to do but it is going to be a great experience for me.”

The five selected professionals from the National Qualifying will be joined by four local amateurs, three invited players from the MGA and four Malaysians who qualified to take part through their Asian Tour Rankings.

The four day European Tour co-sanctioned event runs from 12-15th February. The line-up will include world class players including Anthony Kim and Shingo Katayama, all playing for a share of the US$2million prize purse and vital prize money on The Race to Dubai.
