Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - March 22 2011
Rhys Davies, Nick Dougherty, Søren Kjeldsen, and Pablo Martin confirm participation at the 50th edition of the Maybank Malaysian Open 2011
European Tour champions Rhys Davies, Nick Dougherty, Søren Kjeldsen and Pablo Martin will join World Number One Martin Kaymer and Open Champion Louis Oosthuizen in the Maybank Malaysian Open 2011 from the 14 -17 April at the renowned Kuala Lumpur Golf and County Club.
Davies’ career blossomed in 2010 when he won the Trophée Hassan II in March. The 25 year old Welshman then went on to enjoy a fine rookie season, finishing 18th in The Race to Dubai with a further three runner-up finishes as well as a share of third place at the Maybank Malaysian Open. Off the course, he was Europe’s ‘12th man’ for The 2010 Ryder Cup at The Celtic Manor Resort in his home country.
Dougherty, a three-time winner on The European Tour, made his name when he claimed the Caltex Masters in Singapore back in 2005, edging out the likes of Europe’s Ryder Cup Captain in 2010, Colin Montgomerie, and Denmark’s Thomas Björn. His next victory came two years later in 2007 when he bagged the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship at St Andrews and in 2009 the 28-year-old Englishman capped a fine season with an outstanding victory at the BMW International Open in Munich.
Kjeldsen, regarded as one of the grittiest competitors around, notched a stunning victory at the 2009 Open de Andalucia de Golf before recording his best finish in a Major – tied sixth at that year’s US PGA Championship. The 35-year-old Dane also won the 2008 Volvo Masters at the iconic Valderrama on Spain’s Costa del Sol.
Martin will be looking to add to his already considerable haul of ‘firsts’ by winning for the first time in Asia. In 2007 he made European Tour history as the first amateur to win a Tour event when he claimed the Estoril Open de Portugal. The 24-year-old Spaniard subsequently added his second Tour title at the Alfred Dunhill Championship in South Africa, the first event of The 2010 Race to Dubai, before completing his hat trick of ‘firsts’ by successfully defending his title 12 months later at the opening tournament of The 2011 European Tour International Schedule.
This year, the tournament reaches a milestone as it celebrates its 50th edition as some of the world’s best golfers gather to compete at the renowned Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club from the 14th to 17th April 2011. In addition to the above names, World Number Eight Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland and South Africa’s Charl Schwartzel, who won his sixth European Tour title in the Joburg Open in January, will tee up.
Having made history as the first ever co-sanctioned tournament in Asia between The European and Asian Tours in 1999, the Maybank Malaysian Open 2011 will feature top players from the rankings of both Tours to make up the 156-player line-up.
Points earned at the Maybank Malaysian Open 2011 will go towards the Asian Tour Order of Merit, and The 2011 Race to Dubai where the top 60 players will once again contest the season-ending Dubai World Championship.
A star-studded field is expected at the 50th edition of the Maybank Malaysian Open, with the Malaysian professionals competing with some of the world’s best players for the championship title. With a USD 2.5 million prize purse up on offer, spectators can expect an exciting tournament this April. The four-day co-sanctioned event will take place at the West Course of the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club from 14th - 17th April 2011.

About the European Tour
